Description
Eotetranychus weldoni is a species of spider mite belonging to the family Tetranychidae (order Trombidiformes). These microscopic arthropods are significant agricultural pests known for their ability to rapidly infest various woody plant species, causing severe physiological stress to the host.
The mite primarily targets fruit trees, including stone fruits and pome fruits. It is typically found on the undersides of leaves, where it feeds on plant cells, leading to a reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage. Its presence is often confirmed by the delicate webbing it spins across the leaf surface.
The biological cycle of this mite is highly influenced by climatic conditions, with high temperatures and low humidity significantly accelerating its life cycle. In optimal conditions, a generation can develop in approximately 10 to 14 days. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, with mated females seeking refuge in bark crevices or plant debris.
Symptoms of infestation include chlorotic spots on the leaves, which initially appear as tiny stippling. As the colony grows, the leaves may turn yellow, bronzed, and eventually dry out or abscise prematurely. This damage significantly hampers tree vigor and can lead to reduced fruit quality and yield over time.
