Ephialtes

Ephialtes is a genus of parasitoid wasps belonging to the family Ichneumonidae (order Hymenoptera). These insects are highly specialized parasitoids that play a significant role in forest ecosystems by controlling populations of wood-boring larvae that inhabit various deciduous and coniferous tree species.

The primary hosts of Ephialtes species include wood-boring larvae, such as those of longhorn beetles and horntails. These wasps are specifically adapted to locate their hosts through the dense structure of the bark and wood, which makes them highly efficient at tracking hidden wood-infesting pests.

The life cycle begins when the female wasp detects the vibrations or chemical cues of a larva deep inside the tree. Once the host is located, the female uses her elongated ovipositor to penetrate the wood and lay an egg in the vicinity of or directly on the larva, which serves as a food source for the developing wasp offspring.

While they are technically parasitoids, their activity is often noticed in areas where trees are already struggling due to drought, physical damage, or prior infestation by other pests. The physical damage caused by the ovipositor is minor, but the presence of these wasps is a clear indicator that the tree host is under severe physiological stress.
