Unlike typical agricultural pests that consume plant tissue directly, this insect is a parasitoid that targets wood-boring larvae. While biologically fascinating, its activity within tree trunks can be detrimental to the health and structural integrity of affected trees.

The primary hosts for this wasp include larvae of various beetles, such as longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) and buprestids, which inhabit the wood of fruit and forest trees. By paralyzing these larvae and using them as a food source for their own offspring, Ephialtes inanis plays a complex role in the ecosystem, often appearing in weakened or diseased orchard stands.
