Ephialtes inquisitor

Ephialtes inquisitor is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. Known for its sophisticated hunting behavior, this insect plays a dual role in the environment, acting primarily as a parasitoid of wood-boring larvae that inhabit both forest trees and cultivated fruit orchards.

This species targets a variety of plants, commonly affecting fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, and plums. It is particularly attracted to trees infested with primary pests like wood-boring beetles (Cerambycidae and Buprestidae). The wasp uses its long ovipositor to drill through bark and wood to reach the larvae located inside the tree trunk or branches.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female detects vibrations caused by the larvae feeding inside the wood. Once a host is located, she inserts her ovipositor and deposits an egg on or near the host larva. The emerging wasp larva consumes the host, effectively killing it. The lifecycle is completed within the host's gallery, where the wasp eventually pupates and emerges as an adult.

While often considered beneficial due to its role in regulating populations of wood-boring pests, Ephialtes inquisitor can become a nuisance in orchards. The extensive drilling performed by the female to deposit her eggs creates numerous wounds on the bark. These holes can serve as entry points for various pathogens, including fungi and bacteria, which may lead to trunk rot or general tree decline.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Regular orchard sanitation by removing infested, dead, or dying wood to eliminate nesting grounds.
• Maintaining tree vigor through balanced nutrition and proper hydration to enhance natural defenses.
