Ephialtes mesocentrus is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae within the order Hymenoptera. While often categorized under forest pests due to its complex interactions with timber-dwelling insects, it primarily functions as a specialized parasitoid, exerting natural control over wood-boring larvae.

This species targets larvae of wood-boring beetles and horntails infesting coniferous and deciduous trees. By inserting its ovipositor deep into the tree trunk, the female reaches the larvae hidden within the wood or beneath the bark, providing a crucial biological check on the population density of tree-damaging insects.

The life cycle of Ephialtes mesocentrus is highly specialized. The adult wasp detects the vibration or chemical traces produced by the host larvae. Upon successful oviposition, the wasp larva develops as an external or internal parasite, eventually killing the host. This process is synchronized with the seasonal activity of the host species.
