Unlike agricultural pests that directly damage crops, this insect functions as a parasitoid, meaning it completes its larval development by consuming the tissues of other insects, primarily wood-boring larvae found within trees.

The primary hosts for Ephialtes ontario are typically the larvae of wood-boring beetles and horntails. By targeting these pests, the wasp plays a significant regulatory role in forest ecosystems. While it does not feed on leaves or fruits, its presence is a clear indicator that the tree is already infested by primary xylophagous insects that compromise structural integrity.

The life cycle begins when the adult female locates a suitable host hidden beneath the bark or deep within the wood. Using specialized receptors, she detects the presence of the larva and utilizes a long, needle-like ovipositor to drill through the timber.
