It is a parasitic wasp that exhibits a complex life strategy. While it often functions as a parasitoid of other forest insects, its interaction with developing plant tissues makes it a significant concern for silviculture and nursery management.

Host plants: This insect primarily targets conifer species, with a particular affinity for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), spruce, and larch. It is especially problematic in young forest stands and nursery plantations, where the impact on the terminal buds and shoots significantly affects the architectural development and overall vitality of the young trees.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult wasps emerge in late spring and summer. Females utilize specialized chemoreceptors to locate suitable oviposition sites. They typically overwinter as pupae within cocoons located either inside the host or within the damaged plant tissues, ensuring survival through harsh winter conditions.

By piercing the terminal buds and succulent shoots, the insect causes structural injury that frequently leads to bud necrosis, shoot deformation, and secondary fungal infections. This impairment of apical growth is a major cause of stunted development in young pine seedlings, leading to economic losses in forestry.
