Description

The autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is a significant defoliator in northern temperate forests, frequently exhibiting cyclic population outbreaks that lead to severe damage to various deciduous tree species.

The moth targets a wide range of host plants, most notably birch, alder, aspen, and oak. While primarily a forest pest, its larvae can pose a threat to fruit orchards and ornamental plantings located near woodland edges, causing substantial foliage loss and stress to the infested plants.

The species has a univoltine life cycle. Adult moths emerge and fly in the autumn, typically during September and October. Females deposit eggs onto the bark of host trees, where they overwinter. In the spring, coinciding with bud burst, larvae emerge and begin feeding voraciously on expanding leaves, continuing their development through early summer.

The damage caused by this insect is primarily through defoliation. Larvae consume leaf tissue, often leaving only the veins behind or completely stripping the tree. Heavy infestation can lead to significant biomass loss, reduced wood production, and increased susceptibility of the trees to secondary invaders such as wood-boring beetles or fungal diseases.

Integrated management of the autumnal moth involves both monitoring and control tactics. Key strategies include:

  • Installing physical barriers like sticky bands to prevent flightless females from climbing trees.
  • Applying biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, when larvae are in their early instars.
  • Conserving and promoting natural enemies like parasitoids and insectivorous birds to regulate population numbers.
