Systematic position: The Caucasian potato flea beetle (Epitrix caucasica) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a significant pest primarily affecting plants in the Solanaceae family. Because of its specialized feeding habits, it poses a recurring threat to both field and greenhouse vegetable production.

Host crops and impact: This pest primarily targets potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. The damage is two-fold: adults feed on the foliage, causing extensive defoliation and reduced photosynthetic activity, while larvae inhabit the soil and feed on the roots and tubers. This dual attack strategy can lead to substantial yield losses and degradation of the overall health of the plants.

Biology and lifecycle: The beetle overwinters in the adult stage within the soil or under surface debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on wild and cultivated hosts. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the base of host plants. The larval stage develops underground, passing through several instars before pupation. Depending on climatic conditions, the insect can produce multiple generations within a single growing season.
