Description

The potato flea beetle (Epitrix cucumeris) is a small beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. It is widely recognized as a serious agricultural pest that poses a significant threat to the productivity of solanaceous crops throughout many growing regions.

The primary hosts of this pest include potato, tomato, eggplant, pepper, and tobacco. Adult beetles are characterized by their strong hind legs, which enable them to jump quickly when disturbed, making them difficult to monitor and target during routine field inspections.

Regarding their biology, adult beetles hibernate in plant debris or soil along field margins. After emerging in early spring, they feed on emerging host plants before laying eggs in the soil. The larval stage follows, where the larvae live underground and feed primarily on the fibrous roots and tubers of the host plant.

The damage caused by flea beetles is distinct: adults create small, circular "shot-hole" punctures in the foliage, reducing the leaf surface area available for photosynthesis. Heavy infestations can cause premature defoliation, while larval feeding tunnels into tubers can reduce marketability and promote secondary infections by pathogens.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes:

  • Maintaining a clean field environment by removing solanaceous weeds.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation schedules to break the pest cycle.
  • Using row covers for small-scale garden production.
  • Applying systemic insecticides or foliar sprays when economic thresholds are exceeded.
