Tobacco flea beetle

The Epitrix fasciata, commonly known as the tobacco flea beetle, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This small beetle is recognized as a significant agricultural pest worldwide. It is particularly noted for its agility and jumping capabilities, which facilitate its movement between host plants in a field environment.

This pest specializes in feeding on solanaceous crops. Primary hosts include tobacco, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Adult beetles feed on the foliage, creating distinct, minute, pin-like holes. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial defoliation, which severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and stunts overall growth.

The biological cycle of Epitrix fasciata involves complex interactions with soil environments. Females deposit eggs in the soil around the base of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the root systems and underground stems. This subterranean feeding can weaken seedlings, making the plant more susceptible to environmental stress and diseases.
