The Tobacco flea beetle (Latin: Epitrix hirtipennis) is a destructive pest belonging to the Chrysomelidae family, specifically the flea beetle subfamily. This small beetle is characterized by its enlarged hind legs, which enable it to jump great distances when disturbed, making it a difficult pest to monitor and manage effectively in fields.

The primary host range of Epitrix hirtipennis is centered on the Solanaceae family. It is particularly notorious for damaging commercial crops such as tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants. The beetle feeds on the foliage, significantly affecting the plant's health from the seedling stage through to full maturity.

The life cycle of this pest involves a complete metamorphosis comprising eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within soil crevices or underneath debris. Once temperatures rise in the spring, adults emerge to feed on host foliage. Larvae typically live in the soil, feeding on roots and underground stems, which often causes invisible damage that weakens the plant's structural integrity.

Feeding injury appears as small, circular, "shot-hole" pits in the leaves, which are caused by adult beetles.
