Description

Taxonomic position. The potato flea beetle (Epitrix intermedia) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly damaging to crops within the Solanaceae family, leading to both aesthetic and structural damage to the harvested product.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets members of the Solanaceae family, including potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. By feeding on both cultivated plants and related weed species, the flea beetle maintains its presence in the field environment throughout the growing season, posing a continuous threat to the yield.

Biology and life cycle. Adults hibernate in soil debris or protected areas near fields. In the spring, they emerge to feed on the foliage of emerging host plants. Females lay eggs in the soil near the base of the plant. Upon hatching, larvae feed on the roots and eventually tunnel into the developing tubers. After completing their larval development, they pupate in the soil before emerging as a new generation of adults.

Damage patterns and economic impact. Adult flea beetles create small, characteristic "shot-holes" in the leaves, which can reduce photosynthetic capacity if the infestation is severe. The most significant damage, however, is caused by larvae mining into tubers, which creates superficial scarring or deep tunnels. This significantly impacts the market value of the potatoes and makes them more susceptible to rots and soil-borne diseases.

  • Rigorous weed control to eliminate alternative food sources.
  • Using deep tillage to disrupt the soil environment and destroy pupae.
  • Applying insecticides at the time of adult emergence to prevent egg laying.
  • Utilizing systemic treatments when economic thresholds for infestation are met.
These measures should be integrated to reduce the reliance on chemical applications while maintaining the quality of the harvested produce.
