Systematic position. The black potato flea beetle Epitrix nigroaenea belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This small but destructive insect is a well-known pest that specifically targets members of the Solanaceae family, requiring constant monitoring by farmers to prevent major crop losses.

Host crops and damage. The pest predominantly feeds on potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Adult beetles chew characteristic small holes in the foliage, giving leaves a perforated appearance, which can significantly stunt the growth of young plants. Meanwhile, larvae feed on the root systems and tunnel into tubers, causing aesthetic damage and providing entry points for various soil-borne pathogens.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the soil or under debris as adult beetles. When spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge and begin feeding on early host plants. Eggs are laid in the soil near the plant base, and the subsequent larval stage develops entirely underground, feeding on roots and tubers before pupating in the soil.

Nature of harm. Severe infestations lead to substantial defoliation, which impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize and results in reduced yields. The larval damage to tubers is particularly problematic for commercial growers, as it creates cosmetic flaws and can facilitate the entry of rot-inducing organisms, leading to significant spoilage during the post-harvest storage phase.

Control measures. Managing Epitrix nigroaenea requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies.
