Potato flea beetle

Epitrix papa, commonly known as the potato flea beetle, is a significant member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This quarantine pest is a major threat to global potato production, causing substantial economic losses due to both its direct feeding habits and its role as a vector for various plant pathogens.

The host range of this beetle primarily focuses on Solanaceae species, with potatoes being the most susceptible crop. Tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are also frequently attacked. The pest's ability to thrive in diverse environments allows it to expand its range rapidly, complicating pest management strategies for commercial farmers and home gardeners alike.

The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in the spring to feed on foliage. The female beetle lays eggs near the base of the host plant. The emerging larvae migrate downward to feed on the root system and, crucially, burrow into the developing tubers, impacting crop quality significantly.

Feeding damage by adults is characterized by tiny, "shot-hole" perforations on the leaves, which can reduce photosynthetic capacity if the infestation is severe. The larval damage to the tubers is more economically damaging, resulting in tunnels or "pimples" on the surface, which makes the tubers unmarketable and susceptible to soil-borne secondary rots and bacterial infections.
