The potato flea beetle (Epitrix pilosa) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. This small insect is recognized as a significant pest in potato cultivation, capable of causing substantial damage to both foliage and tubers.
It primarily attacks plants of the Solanaceae family, including potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Its ability to infest both cultivated crops and wild nightshade species makes it a persistent challenge for farmers during the entire growing season.
The biology of Epitrix pilosa involves complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in the spring to feed on leaves, while females deposit eggs in the soil near the plant base. Larvae subsequently hatch and feed on the root system and developing tubers, passing through several instars before pupating in the soil.
Damage caused by adults is characterized by "shot-hole" patterns on the leaves, which can reduce photosynthetic efficiency. Larval damage is often more critical, as they create tunnels and surface scarring on potato tubers, significantly degrading the market value and creating entry points for pathogens such as fungi and bacteria.
