Potato flea beetle Priesner

Epitrix priesneri is a species of beetle belonging to the Chrysomelidae family within the order Coleoptera. Commonly referred to as a type of flea beetle, it is a significant pest that poses a threat to commercial agriculture, particularly due to its ability to jump rapidly, which complicates detection and mechanical control efforts.

This pest primarily attacks plants within the Solanaceae family. Key host crops include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. The wide range of host plants allows the beetle to thrive in diverse agricultural settings, often shifting between cultivated crops and wild nightshades located in field margins.

The biology of the species involves a complex life cycle comprising egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adult beetles overwinter in sheltered locations, typically in the topsoil or under leaf litter. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to feed on foliage and subsequently deposit eggs in the soil around the base of host plants.

The damage caused by this insect is twofold. Adults create small, circular shot-holes in the leaves, which can stunt plant growth if infestation levels are high. More significantly, the larvae reside underground, feeding on roots and burrowing into potato tubers, resulting in unsightly tracks and lesions that make the produce unmarketable and susceptible to fungal or bacterial rots.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest control to minimize reliance on chemicals:

• Maintaining field hygiene by eliminating nightshade weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
