Description

Systematic position. The mottled umber moth (Erannis defoliaria) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae. It is a well-known defoliator that frequently causes economic damage in temperate deciduous forests and commercial fruit orchards.

Host plants and damage. This species is highly polyphagous, attacking a variety of fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as forest trees like oak and lime. Larvae feed aggressively on leaves, causing skeletonization that drastically reduces the photosynthetic surface, leading to weakened growth and poor fruit quality.

Biology and life cycle. Adults emerge in late autumn, typically from September to November. A defining feature of this species is sexual dimorphism: males possess wings, while females are wingless and must crawl up tree trunks to oviposit. The eggs overwinter in bark crevices. Upon hatching in spring, larvae feed on foliage for several weeks before pupating in the soil.

Protection measures. The primary control method involves applying sticky tree bands in autumn to prevent wingless females from reaching the canopy. Orchard sanitation, such as scraping loose bark to remove overwintering egg clutches, is also beneficial. In cases of severe infestations, targeted chemical or biological insecticide applications during early larval development are recommended.

Economic impact. Severe outbreaks can lead to complete defoliation, which causes significant stress to trees, reduces their ability to store energy for winter, and leads to yield losses. Consistent monitoring and the use of integrated pest management practices are essential to protect the long-term health of perennial woody crops.
