Systematic position: The Algerian hedgehog (Erinaceus algirus) belongs to the order Eulipotyphla and the family Erinaceidae. While often viewed as beneficial due to insect consumption, their presence in high densities within agricultural settings can lead to significant economic losses, classifying them as opportunistic pests for certain specialty crops.

Crops affected: This species is omnivorous and highly adaptable. It frequently causes damage to melons, watermelons, and strawberries, particularly as fruits ripen and sugar content increases. In addition to commercial crops, they may disturb young seedlings, ornamental plants, and vegetable garden beds in search of food and shelter.

Biology and life cycle: The Algerian hedgehog is primarily nocturnal and crepuscular. It is well-adapted to Mediterranean climates and arid conditions. Its life cycle involves breeding once per year, typically in the spring and summer. They occupy diverse habitats, including agricultural land, where they build shallow burrows or take shelter under vegetation, coinciding with the peak growing season for many garden crops.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The primary harm is mechanical damage to ripening fruit, often leading to rapid decay due to fungal and bacterial infections entering through bite marks. Furthermore, their nocturnal activity and movement within dense foliage can crush crops. They also act as potential vectors for various pathogens and ectoparasites, which can pose a secondary risk to both the gardener and domestic pets present on the site.

Protective measures: Management of the Algerian hedgehog focuses on exclusion rather than eradication. Recommended strategies include:

• Installing wire mesh fencing at least 60 cm high, buried slightly underground.
• Utilizing motion-activated light sensors or ultrasonic repellent devices.
• Clearing potential nesting sites such as piles of wood or dense, unmaintained shrubbery near gardens.
• Applying non-toxic scent-based repellents around the perimeter of the crop area to discourage foraging behavior.
