While often viewed as beneficial due to their insectivorous diet, they can behave as incidental pests in agricultural settings by damaging plant root systems and fruit production during their nocturnal foraging activities.

Crops affected: This mammal frequently disturbs garden beds containing seedlings, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and leafy greens. By digging into loose soil to hunt for worms or soil insects, they often expose and damage delicate roots. Additionally, they are known to consume strawberries and other low-growing fruits, causing significant yield losses for small-scale growers.

Biology and life cycle: These creatures are nocturnal foragers with a hibernation cycle that dictates their seasonal impact.
