Eriocampa
Eriocampa
Description
Eriocampa is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae, commonly known as sawflies. The most prominent species, Eriocampa ovata, is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant damage to various deciduous trees and horticultural crops.
These pests primarily target species such as alder, birch, and a range of Rosaceae family members, including apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. While they are often considered minor pests in balanced ecosystems, their populations can surge in specific garden environments, leading to noticeable aesthetic and physiological damage to host plants.
The life cycle of Eriocampa involves a complete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter in the soil within protective cocoons. In the spring, adult sawflies emerge, mate, and deposit their eggs on the underside of leaves. The larvae, which resemble small slugs or caterpillars, feed voraciously on the leaf tissues, passing through several larval instars before dropping back into the soil to pupate.
The primary damage inflicted by this pest is leaf skeletonization. Larvae consume the soft parenchyma of the leaves while leaving the venation intact, which results in a characteristic web-like appearance of the foliage. Severe infestations often lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth of shoots, and overall physiological stress, which compromises the tree's health and future fruit yield.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls include autumn soil cultivation beneath host trees to disrupt the overwintering pupae and the removal of infested leaf debris. If chemical intervention is necessary, targeted application of appropriate insecticides during the early larval stage is highly effective. Regular scouting of orchards or nurseries is essential to identify the presence of larvae early and prevent large-scale defoliation.
