The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is an invasive crustacean species belonging to the order Decapoda and the family Varunidae. Native to East Asia, it has successfully established populations across Europe and North America, causing significant ecological and economic disruption in agricultural and water management settings.
In agriculture, the Chinese mitten crab is primarily recognized as a damaging agent in paddy fields and irrigation networks. Because these crabs inhabit freshwater environments and can travel overland, they easily invade farmland, where they interact destructively with cultivated crops and essential water infrastructure.
The biology of Eriocheir sinensis is characterized by a catadromous life cycle, meaning adults live in freshwater and migrate to brackish or marine estuaries to reproduce. Their larval development occurs in salt water, and the subsequent juvenile stages migrate back upstream, allowing the species to spread throughout entire river systems effectively.
The damage caused by these crabs is twofold: structural and botanical. By digging extensive burrowing systems into embankments, dams, and levees, they compromise the integrity of water control structures, leading to erosion and leakage. In rice cultivation, the crabs are known to cut and consume young rice seedlings, significantly reducing crop density and overall productivity.
