Description
The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) belongs to the order Decapoda, family Varunidae. As a highly invasive species, it is recognized globally for its ability to cause severe structural damage to infrastructure and aquatic agricultural environments.
The biology of the species is characterized by catadromous migration, where adults move to brackish estuaries to spawn, while juveniles migrate upstream into freshwater river systems. This life cycle enables them to colonize irrigation canals, drainage networks, and large water reservoirs, often far from their original habitats.
In an agricultural context, the primary threat is structural damage. The crabs excavate extensive burrow systems in the banks of canals and levees. These burrows significantly weaken the integrity of the soil, leading to water seepage, soil erosion, and the potential failure of flood-protection structures and irrigation embankments.
Furthermore, these crabs affect rice cultivation by burrowing into the dikes of rice paddies and potentially damaging young rice seedlings. Their feeding habits also extend to aquatic plants and invertebrates, disrupting the ecosystem balance and destroying the infrastructure necessary for water management in large-scale farms.
Effective management strategies include the installation of physical barriers and fine-mesh screens to block migration paths. Intensive trapping programs are essential during peak migration periods to reduce population density, combined with the structural reinforcement of vital embankments using geotextiles to prevent burrowing.
