Eristalinus aeneus is a member of the Syrphidae family within the order Diptera. While many hoverflies are beneficial, this species is noted in agricultural contexts due to its larval stage, which develops in highly organic, polluted aquatic environments, potentially impacting farm hygiene.

The biology of the species is defined by its specialized larvae, commonly known as rat-tailed maggots. These larvae possess a long, telescopic posterior breathing siphon that allows them to remain submerged in anaerobic, stagnant water while accessing atmospheric oxygen. They thrive in ditches, manure lagoons, and polluted ponds.

The life cycle encompasses four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult flies are attracted to flowers, but their larvae require specific semi-liquid habitats rich in decaying organic matter to complete their development. In optimal temperatures, generations can overlap throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by this insect is largely indirect. The primary concern is the contamination of irrigation water reservoirs. High concentrations of larvae can degrade water quality, potentially introducing pathogens to crops if used for overhead irrigation. Furthermore, their presence is often an indicator of poor waste management on the farm.
