Description

Taxonomic position. The spruce cone borer (Latin: Ernobius abietinus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae. It is a specialized pest known for impacting the reproductive structures of conifer species, which poses a significant challenge for foresters and seed production specialists.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts for this insect are various species of spruce, particularly the Norway spruce. By feeding on the internal tissues of developing cones, the larvae destroy the seed-bearing scales and the seeds themselves, leading to substantial losses in annual seed yields.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Ernobius abietinus is closely linked to the phenology of the host trees. Adults emerge during the flowering period, and females oviposit under the scales of young, developing cones. The larvae hatch and bore into the cone axis, creating tunnels and filling them with frass as they consume the interior.

Symptoms of infestation. Infested cones often show signs of premature browning and malformation. The most common diagnostic feature is the presence of small entry holes and fine, brownish wood dust (boring meal) accumulating at the base of the cone scales. Attacked cones are usually useless for seed extraction purposes.

  • Harvesting cones early before the adult beetles emerge.
  • Applying registered insecticides during the peak flight period of the adults.
