Description

Systematic position: The conifer cone beetle (Ernobius conicola) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae (death-watch beetles). It is a specialized pest that evolved to exploit the reproductive structures of coniferous trees.

Affected crops: This beetle primarily infests various species of pine (Pinus). The larvae are highly dependent on the internal tissue and seeds of mature cones for their nutritional requirements throughout their development.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles emerge in spring and summer to mate. Females deposit eggs in the gaps between cone scales. The emerging larvae tunnel into the cone, feeding on seeds and core tissues. Depending on local temperature and moisture conditions, the life cycle may extend over one or two years.
