Systematic position. The long-horned anobiid beetle (Ernobius longicornis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae. This species is highly specialized, primarily associated with coniferous trees, where it plays the role of a xylophagous pest affecting the health and structural integrity of its host plants.

Host plants and distribution. The pest is predominantly found in forested areas, targeting coniferous species such as spruce and fir. It thrives in weakened trees, though it can also infest healthy material if local populations reach high densities. Its presence is often associated with disturbed forest ecosystems or poor plantation management.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is characterized by a cryptic larval stage, which is spent entirely inside the plant tissue. Adult beetles emerge during the warmer months to mate and deposit eggs in crevices on the bark or within the structure of cones. The larvae tunnel through the wood or reproductive tissues, creating galleries that sustain them until they reach maturity and pupation.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Larval tunneling severely disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to branch dieback and overall vigor loss. In nurseries, this can cause significant aesthetic and growth degradation. Furthermore, the galleries made by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as wood-decaying fungi, which can ultimately lead to the death of the affected part or the entire tree.
