The soft-winged pine borer (Latin: Ernobius mollis) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae. It is a well-known technical pest that primarily targets conifer wood that still retains its bark, making it a significant concern for the timber industry.
The beetle affects various coniferous tree species, including spruce, pine, fir, and larch. While it can occur in weakened or dying trees in natural forests, it is most commonly found in unprocessed timber, construction lumber, and stored wood products that have not been properly debarked or treated.
The life cycle of Ernobius mollis typically lasts for one year. Adult females deposit eggs within the crevices of the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow beneath the bark to feed on the inner bark (phloem) and the outer sapwood, creating intricate, wandering galleries. Pupation occurs within these galleries, and the emerging adults exit through distinct, circular exit holes.
The primary economic impact of this pest is the degradation of timber quality. While the larvae do not usually penetrate deep into the heartwood, their feeding destroys the cambium layer and damages the surface of the wood. This significantly reduces the aesthetic and structural value of the timber, making it unsuitable for high-quality construction or decorative uses.
Effective management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation. The most critical control measure is the prompt removal of bark from harvested logs to eliminate the necessary conditions for larval development. Proper storage practices, such as maintaining dry and well-ventilated conditions for lumber, are essential. In cases of infestation, chemical treatments or professional fumigation may be required to eradicate the pests.
