Systematic position: Ernobius nigrinus is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Ptinidae (Anobiidae). It is recognized as a specific wood-boring insect that targets coniferous species, playing a significant role in forest ecology as a secondary pest.
Host plants: The primary hosts of this beetle are spruce trees, particularly the Norway spruce. The insect typically colonizes physiologically weakened, dying, or recently felled timber, thriving in the bark and outer sapwood layers of its host.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge during the warmer months of late spring and summer. Following mating, females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark or beneath bark scales, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.

These galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water within the tree, which can accelerate the decline of already stressed spruce trees.
