Eucolaspis beetle

Systematic position and distribution. The genus Eucolaspis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. Commonly known as leaf beetles, these insects are particularly noted for their impact in agricultural regions like New Zealand. They are recognized as significant pests that affect both horticultural and ornamental plants, causing periodic outbreaks that require active monitoring.

Host crops. Eucolaspis species exhibit a preference for a wide variety of broad-leaved plants. Commercial fruit trees such as apple, pear, and stone fruits are primary targets. Additionally, they are known to feed on legumes like clover and various shrubs. Because of their wide host range, these beetles can easily move between wild vegetation and managed orchards, making population control challenging.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Eucolaspis consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adults typically emerge in late spring to early summer to feed on foliage. Mating occurs shortly after, and eggs are deposited into the soil at the base of host plants. Larvae develop underground, feeding on roots and root hairs, which makes this stage particularly cryptic and difficult to detect until plant vitality declines.

Nature of damage and economic impact. Adult beetles cause extensive damage by chewing irregular holes in leaves, often resulting in severe defoliation. More critically, they feed on young fruit, leaving characteristic scarring and pits that significantly degrade the market value of the crop. Larval feeding on root systems can stunt tree growth and reduce the plant's overall vigor, increasing susceptibility to environmental stress.

• Implement regular monitoring programs using light traps during the adult emergence period.
• Apply systemic or contact insecticides when beetle density exceeds economic thresholds.
• Practice orchard floor management by cultivating soil to disrupt pupal development.
• Clear weeds and secondary host plants from the orchard perimeter to minimize breeding grounds.
