Description
Taxonomy: The fruit-piercing moth (Eudocima fullonia) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae (subfamily Calpinae). Unlike many other lepidopteran pests, it is the adult stage of this insect that causes significant economic damage to horticulture.
Host range: This moth attacks a wide variety of tropical and subtropical fruits. Preferred hosts include citrus, bananas, mangoes, papayas, and peaches. Its specialized mouthparts allow it to pierce thick, tough fruit skins that other insects cannot penetrate.
Biology and life cycle: The larval stage develops on plants within the family Menispermaceae, feeding exclusively on foliage. Once metamorphosed, the nocturnal adults migrate to fruit orchards. They are strong fliers and can travel long distances to locate suitable feeding sites in orchards.
Damage and economic impact: The damage is caused by the adults piercing the fruit surface to consume the juice. This act creates entry points for various microorganisms, leading to rapid fermentation, rot, and eventual fruit drop. The loss is compounded by the fact that the damage often occurs just before harvest.
Management strategies: Controlling Eudocima fullonia is challenging due to the mobility of the adults. Integrated pest management should prioritize:
- Eliminating host vines of the Menispermaceae family from the surroundings.
- Using exclusion netting to physically protect fruit clusters.
- Implementing light traps to reduce adult populations at night.
- Applying bagging techniques for individual high-value fruits.
