The fruit-piercing moth (Eudocima materna) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the family Erebidae. Native to tropical and subtropical regions, this species is highly specialized in its feeding habits, posing a constant challenge for farmers in affected climatic zones across Africa, Asia, and Australia.
This moth primarily targets a wide range of fruit crops including citrus, mango, banana, papaya, and pomegranate. Its ability to feed on almost any juicy fruit allows it to thrive in diverse agricultural landscapes, often causing substantial economic losses by ruining high-value harvests.
The biology of Eudocima materna is notable for its specialized adult feeding mechanism. While the larvae feed on host plants of the Menispermaceae family, the adults possess a sharp, sclerotized proboscis capable of piercing the tough rind of maturing fruits to access the sugars inside. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.
Damage caused by the moth is typically mechanical, characterized by small puncture marks on the fruit surface. These wounds provide entry points for secondary pathogens such as bacteria and fungi, leading to rapid rotting and fruit drop. The pest's nocturnal behavior allows it to escape detection, and a single moth can damage multiple fruits in a single night.
Effective management requires an integrated approach:
- Bagging individual fruits or installing netting over trees to physically exclude moths.
