Eudocima salaminia is a species of moth within the family Erebidae, widely recognized as a significant agricultural pest known as the fruit-piercing moth. Native to tropical and subtropical regions across Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, it poses a direct economic threat to various fruit-bearing trees, particularly citrus orchards.
Systematically, this insect belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae. A key evolutionary adaptation of the adult moth is a specialized, sclerotized proboscis that is strong enough to pierce the tough rinds of ripening fruits, allowing them to extract juice directly from the pulp.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on host plants, primarily from the Menispermaceae family.
