Eudorcas gazelle

The genus Eudorcas is a group of antelopes within the family Bovidae and order Artiodactyla. While they are wild fauna, they are frequently categorized as pests in agricultural contexts throughout their range in the arid regions of Africa. Their habit of feeding on cultivated plants poses a significant challenge for local subsistence and commercial farming operations.

These animals target a variety of crops, primarily preferring young cereal shoots such as sorghum, pearl millet, and maize. Leguminous plants are also commonly consumed during the early growth stages. The preference for high-protein, succulent vegetation leads them to target carefully managed fields, often resulting in significant economic damage to farmers.

The biology of these gazelles is adapted to dry environments, with their movement patterns dictated by seasonal vegetation changes. As natural forage dries up, Eudorcas populations move toward areas where agricultural activities provide a constant source of water and green fodder. Their high mobility makes them difficult to manage without structural interventions.

The extent of damage caused by these ungulates includes the total consumption of young seedlings, leading to crop failure. Additionally, trampling by large groups causes soil compaction, which inhibits root penetration and disrupts water infiltration. The combination of feeding and physical destruction leads to sparse stands and reduced yields at harvest time.

To mitigate the negative impact of Eudorcas on agricultural land, farmers adopt several protective strategies aimed at exclusion and deterrents:

• Installation of sturdy perimeter fencing to physically restrict animal access.
• Implementation of motion-activated light and noise devices to deter nocturnal grazing.
• Deployment of guards to monitor crops during critical maturation phases.
• Maintenance of clean perimeters to reduce the cover attractive to grazing herds.
