Thomson's gazelle

Thomson's gazelle (Eudorcas thomsoni) is a member of the family Bovidae within the order Artiodactyla. While recognized as a wildlife species, it is often documented as an agricultural pest in regions where its habitats overlap with farmland, as grazing herds can inflict substantial damage on cultivated crops and pastures intended for livestock.

These gazelles primarily inhabit open savannas but are opportunistic foragers that frequently invade agricultural fields to feed on palatable crops. They are known to target various grain crops, legumes, and specialized forage grasses. The proximity of farmland to wildlife corridors significantly increases the probability of field encroachment by these antelopes.

The biology of the species is centered around a nomadic, herd-based lifestyle. Reproduction is influenced by the availability of high-quality forage, which usually peaks following rainy seasons. During such periods, the combination of high gazelle population densities and fresh agricultural growth often leads to direct conflict between wildlife and farming operations.

The damage caused is twofold: direct consumption of plant material (defoliation) and physical destruction of fields through trampling. Intense grazing significantly slows plant recovery and reduces the final yield, particularly when crops are in the early vegetative or reproductive growth stages. This impact can be devastating for small-scale farmers who rely on high yields to maintain productivity.

Mitigation strategies are focused on non-lethal deterrents to protect crop integrity while respecting the ecological role of the gazelles:

• Installation of specialized fencing systems, including electric wire grids.
• Deployment of motion-activated sonic deterrents and strobe lights.
• Application of chemical repellents that are safe for crops but unpleasant for antelopes.
• Maintenance of buffer zones of unpalatable vegetation around the primary crop zones.
