Description

Systematic position: The Phoenix moth (lat. Eulithis prunata) belongs to the family Geometridae and the order Lepidoptera. This species is commonly found across temperate regions and is known for its larvae, which are typical loopers or measuring worms.

Host plants: The moth primarily infests Ribes species such as redcurrant, blackcurrant, and gooseberry. However, it is also a well-documented pest of various Prunus species, including plums, damsons, and sour cherries, as well as occasional attacks on apple trees.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs firmly attached to the branches of the host plant. Hatching occurs in spring, coinciding with the swelling of buds. Pupation takes place in mid-summer, and adult moths emerge later to mate and lay eggs for the following season.

Damage and severity: The primary damage occurs in early spring when larvae emerge and bore into the buds, often destroying them before they bloom. Later in the season, the larvae feed on the foliage, causing ragged, skeletonized leaves and reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, which weakens the overall vigor of the host.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial. Early spring application of registered insecticides during the bud-burst stage is most effective. Physical control measures, such as hand-picking caterpillars on smaller plants and tilling the soil beneath affected bushes to disrupt pupation, can also significantly reduce population levels.
