This case serves as a permanent shelter and a defense mechanism throughout the larval and pupal stages of the insect's life cycle.

Taxonomically, the genus is classified under the order Lepidoptera. Eumasia species exhibit unique biological traits, such as highly reduced wings or even wingless females in some members of the family, which spend their entire adult life within the protective cocoon.
