Lesser bulb fly

The Lesser bulb fly (Eumerus funeralis) is a member of the Diptera order and the Syrphidae family. Adult flies are characterized by a small, compact body with a metallic bronze or black coloration. They are frequently observed hovering around blooming flowers or above soil surfaces, which is a distinctive behavioral trait of this species.

The primary economic damage is caused by the larval stage of the insect. The larvae are generalist feeders and attack a variety of bulbous and tuberous plants. Major host crops include onions, garlic, shallots, carrots, parsnips, and occasionally potatoes. Infestations are often severe in garden settings and fields where crop rotation is not strictly followed.

The life cycle of Eumerus funeralis typically involves overwintering as larvae within infested bulbs or in the soil. In spring, these larvae pupate, and adult flies emerge to mate and lay eggs. Depending on climatic conditions, the pest can complete two to three generations throughout the growing season, with the highest activity observed during warmer, drier periods.

The damage caused by larvae is devastating to the root system and bulbs. They feed on the inner tissues, hollowing out the bulb or root, which quickly leads to decay. Symptoms include chlorosis (yellowing), wilting, and collapse of the foliage. The infested bulbs eventually turn into a foul-smelling, mushy mass, making them completely unfit for consumption or storage.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control.

• Implement a strict crop rotation schedule to prevent the build-up of larval populations in the soil.
• Remove and destroy all crop residues and damaged bulbs immediately after harvest.
• Use fine-mesh netting covers for small-scale plantings to physically block flies from laying eggs.
• Prioritize well-drained, loose soil and avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen, which can attract flies.
• Apply targeted insecticides only if monitoring shows high levels of adult fly activity.
