The Common hermit crab (scientific name Pagurus bernhardus, previously known as Eupagurus bernhardus) is a well-known decapod crustacean belonging to the family Paguridae. Unlike terrestrial pests, this species is exclusively marine and thrives in the North Atlantic and surrounding cold coastal waters.
It is important to note that the Common hermit crab is not an agricultural pest and does not affect land-based crops, vegetables, or fruits. Its ecological niche is strictly confined to the seabed, where it functions as an omnivorous scavenger rather than a phytophagous plant parasite.
The biology of Pagurus bernhardus is defined by its unique morphology, characterized by an unprotected, soft abdomen. To ensure survival, these crabs inhabit empty gastropod shells, such as whelks. As the crab matures, it must continuously locate and occupy larger shells, which serves as a primary driver for its movement and behavior.
The life cycle involves a planktonic larval stage. After hatching, the larvae undergo several molts while drifting with the currents. Once they reach the appropriate developmental stage, they undergo metamorphosis, settle on the marine substrate, and begin their life as bottom-dwellers, often interacting with anemones or other organisms.
In aquaculture environments, particularly those focused on shellfish farming, hermit crabs might be viewed as competitors for resources. Protection measures, where necessary, are limited to physical management, such as the use of traps or sorting mechanisms to prevent the crabs from interfering with the cultivation of commercially valuable bivalve species.
