The biology of hermit crabs is defined by their reliance on gastropod shells to protect their soft, asymmetrical abdomens. Their life cycle consists of planktonic larval stages followed by a settlement phase where they find suitable shells. This behavior is essential for their survival and growth throughout their lifespan.
