Description
Systematic position. The spruce cone pug (Eupithecia abietaria) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae. This moth is a specialized pest that focuses its entire life cycle on the reproductive structures of conifer species, particularly spruce trees.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). In cases of high population density or lack of food, it can also cause damage to other related conifer species within its geographical range, leading to economic losses in forestry seed production.
Biology and life cycle. Adults are typically active in late spring and early summer. Females lay their eggs on developing cones. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the cone, feeding on internal tissues, including scales and developing seeds, which stunts the normal development of the fruit.
Damage and pest status. The larvae cause significant mechanical damage to the interior of the cone. Affected cones frequently turn brown early, become distorted in shape, and fall to the ground prematurely. This infestation can drastically reduce the yield of viable seeds, impacting reforestation efforts.
