Toadflax Pug

The Toadflax Pug (Eupithecia linariata) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. This pest primarily targets plants in the Scrophulariaceae family, particularly toadflax and related ornamental or seed-producing crops, posing a challenge to specialized agricultural and horticultural operations.

The adult moth is relatively small, with a wingspan typically ranging between 17 and 22 mm. Its wings exhibit intricate greyish-brown patterns, providing excellent camouflage against the stems and flowers of its host plants. The larvae are typically cryptic in color, matching the tissues of the host they consume.

The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults are generally nocturnal, with the flight period occurring during the summer months. Females lay their eggs on the flower buds of host plants, where the larvae will eventually emerge to start feeding immediately upon the developing reproductive structures.

The damage caused by the larvae is focused on the reproductive parts of the plant. By boring into flower buds, the larvae consume the developing ovaries and internal tissues. This feeding behavior often causes bud abortion or failure of seed development, leading to a direct decrease in harvest yield and quality, especially for seed-propagated crops.

To manage and mitigate the presence of the Toadflax Pug, several strategies are recommended:

• Maintaining field hygiene by removing alternative host weeds from the vicinity.
• Implementing deep soil cultivation in the autumn to disrupt the pupation sites in the ground.
• Monitoring adult moth population peaks using pheromone or light traps to determine optimal spray timing.
• Applying selective insecticides during the early larval stage if infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
