Spruce pug

Systematic position. The spruce pug (Eupithecia palpata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. It is a moth species recognized for its larvae's preference for coniferous foliage, primarily impacting spruce and pine forests in temperate regions.

Host plants and damage. The larvae primarily feed on the needles and tender buds of spruce trees. Damage often manifests as partial defoliation of the canopy, which weakens the tree. When infestations occur, the aesthetic and commercial value of conifers in forestry or ornamental plantings is significantly reduced due to the stressed condition of the trees.

Biology and life cycle. This species typically completes one generation per year. Overwintering occurs in the pupal stage, usually hidden within the leaf litter or shallow soil layers beneath the host tree. In the spring, adult moths emerge to mate and oviposit. The larval stage occurs during the growing season, providing ample time for the caterpillars to consume foliage before they descend to pupate.

Harmfulness. The spruce pug acts as a defoliator that negatively impacts tree vitality. While individual attacks are rarely fatal, repeated or massive infestations significantly compromise the health of the tree, making it highly susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring beetles and opportunistic fungal pathogens, leading to potential tree mortality.

Control measures. Integrated management is essential for controlling Eupithecia palpata populations:

• Implementation of pheromone monitoring to detect adult flights and estimate population density.
• Use of biological insecticides based on microbial pathogens during the early larval stages for environmentally sound management.
• Application of selective systemic insecticides when thresholds of infestation are exceeded.
• Conservation and enhancement of natural predator habitats, including insectivorous birds and parasitic wasps, to keep populations under control.
