The Juniper pug (Eupithecia pusillata) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. This species is recognized as a specific pest of conifer trees and shrubs, showing a high preference for the genus Juniperus, although it can occasionally infest spruce trees.

The host plants often suffer significant damage to their foliage due to the feeding activity of the larvae. As the larvae consume the needles, the plant loses its vitality and decorative appearance. Heavy infestations can lead to thinning of the crown, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Regarding its biology, the moth typically completes one generation per year. Overwintering occurs primarily in the egg stage, which is usually attached to the needles or small twigs of the host plant. Upon hatching in spring, the larvae feed voraciously on fresh growth. Pupation generally occurs in the soil or leaf litter beneath the host tree, where the insect remains until emergence.

By destroying the growing buds, the larvae significantly hamper the tree's ability to develop new vegetative biomass, which is particularly critical for young or small nursery stock.
