Description
Systematic position. The Foxglove pug moth (lat. Eupithecia pyreneata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Geometridae. It is a highly specialized species that has evolved to exploit the genus Digitalis (foxglove) as its primary food source for larval development.
Host plants. The moth primarily damages various species of foxgloves. It is particularly problematic in botanical gardens, ornamental landscaping, and specialized farms where foxgloves are grown for their pharmacological compounds or aesthetic value.
Biology and life cycle. The adult moth is cryptic, blending perfectly with vegetation. Females deposit eggs on the developing buds. Once the larvae hatch, they burrow directly into the floral structures. The life cycle is strictly seasonal, corresponding with the flowering period of their host plants, with pupation usually occurring in the soil or leaf litter.
Damage and pest status. Larvae are voracious feeders on the inner reproductive parts of the flower. By consuming stamens and pistils, they prevent seed set and often cause the buds to wither or drop prematurely. This leads to severe aesthetic degradation of the plant and reduction of seed yield for propagation purposes.
Protection measures. Effective control involves a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies:
- Regular inspection of flower spikes during the budding stage.
- Prompt manual removal of infested buds to prevent the next generation of larvae.
- Autumn cultivation of the soil around host plants to disturb pupation sites.
- Targeted application of biological insecticides or selective chemical sprays if infestations become severe.
