Description

The brown-tail moth (Euproctis chrysorrhoea) is a destructive defoliator belonging to the family Erebidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of both deciduous trees and various ornamental shrubs, frequently causing widespread damage during outbreaks in temperate climatic zones.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. Preferred hosts include fruit trees like apple, pear, and plum, as well as forest trees such as oak, hawthorn, and beech. The larvae are capable of stripping entire branches, leaving trees vulnerable to other stressors and secondary infections.

The life cycle involves a single generation per year. Larvae overwinter in communal silken webs, or "tents," constructed from leaves secured to twigs with dense silk. Upon the arrival of spring and bud burst, they emerge to feed aggressively. Pupation occurs in late spring or early summer within cocoons spun in foliage, followed by the emergence of white adults.

Beyond the agricultural impact, the brown-tail moth is a public health concern. The larval stages are covered in microscopic barbed hairs that contain a toxin. When these hairs come into contact with human skin or are inhaled, they cause intense irritation, severe rashes, and respiratory issues, making the removal of nests a task requiring caution.

Effective management strategies are essential to keep populations below economic injury levels. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices for Euproctis include:

  • Winter pruning and destruction of larval tents to manually reduce the population.
  • Monitoring with pheromone traps during the adult flight season to time interventions.
  • Applying biological controls, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are highly effective against young larvae.
  • Targeted use of insecticides in spring only if threshold levels of infestation are exceeded.
