Euproctis fraterna, commonly known as the fraternal hairy caterpillar, is an insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. This species is native to several Asian regions and is recognized as a significant threat to agriculture, forestry, and ornamental horticulture due to its wide host range.

The pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast variety of plants. Primary targets include cotton, roses, citrus trees, coffee plants, pomegranate, and various horticultural crops. By consuming foliage, the larvae disrupt the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, thereby weakening the host significantly.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Eggs are laid in clusters, usually on the underside of leaves, and are covered with yellowish-brown hairs from the female's abdomen. Larvae pass through several instars before forming pupae inside silken cocoons attached to the plant surface.

The damage caused by Euproctis fraterna is primarily due to the larval feeding habits. Young larvae engage in gregarious feeding, skeletonizing leaves, while older larvae consume entire leaf blades.
