Description
The yellow-tail moth (Euproctis similis) is a moth of the family Erebidae within the order Lepidoptera. This species is widely recognized in agriculture and forestry as a significant defoliator, capable of causing localized outbreaks that severely affect the vitality of host plants.
This pest has a broad host range, primarily targeting deciduous trees and shrubs. It is commonly found on fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum, as well as on ornamental plants including hawthorn, rose, and various broad-leaved trees like oak and lime. Its ability to adapt to different woody plants facilitates its survival in diverse ecosystems.
The biology of the yellow-tail moth is characterized by a single annual generation. Larvae hibernate in communal webbed nests constructed from silk and leaves, which remain attached to the twigs through winter. Upon the arrival of spring, larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and foliage. Pupation occurs within silken cocoons during mid-summer, followed by the emergence of adults, which are recognizable by their white wings and bright yellow hair tufts on the abdomen.
The damage caused by this pest is primarily associated with the feeding activity of the larvae. Initially, they skeletonize leaves; as they mature, they consume the entire leaf lamina. Heavy infestations lead to significant defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to store nutrients, negatively impacts fruit quality, and stresses the tree significantly.
Protection strategies emphasize integrated pest management. Mechanical control is the most effective preventative measure, involving the systematic removal and destruction of overwintering nests during the dormant season. For chemical control, applications should be timed to target early larval stages, utilizing authorized insecticides applied at the first signs of leaf damage to minimize economic losses.
