Description
The Taiwan hairy caterpillar, scientifically known as Euproctis taiwana, is a significant pest belonging to the Erebidae family, subfamily Lymantriinae. It is recognized for its capacity to cause severe defoliation in various agricultural and horticultural settings, primarily throughout East Asia.
This pest has a broad host range, feeding on numerous fruit and ornamental trees. Commonly infested species include members of the Rosaceae family such as apple, pear, and stone fruits. When infestations occur, the caterpillars can rapidly strip trees of their foliage, leading to physiological stress and reduced fruit quality.
The biological cycle involves multiple generations per year depending on regional temperatures. Adult moths are typically nocturnal. Females lay eggs in clusters covered by specialized setae or scales from their bodies, providing protection against predators and harsh environmental conditions until the larvae emerge.
Damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which consume leaf tissue extensively. Beyond the direct agricultural impact, the caterpillar poses a health risk to workers, as the stinging hairs on their bodies contain toxins that induce severe dermatitis and respiratory irritation upon physical contact.
