The genus Eurytetranychus belongs to the family Tetranychidae (spider mites). These pests are highly specialized, feeding primarily on various coniferous tree species such as spruce, pine, cedar, and juniper. Due to their biology, they can cause significant damage to nursery stock and ornamental plantings if left unchecked.

The life cycle of the mite progresses through egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Favorable conditions, characterized by hot and dry weather, accelerate their development, allowing for multiple generations within a single growing season. They typically overwinter in protected areas of the tree, such as bark crevices or near the base of the needles.

Feeding damage is caused by the mites piercing the plant epidermis and extracting cell contents. This process leads to chlorosis, where the needles turn yellow or brownish, eventually resulting in needle drop. Prolonged infestation significantly weakens the host tree, making it vulnerable to other stress factors and secondary pathogens, which can ultimately lead to tree decline.

Detection often requires close inspection because these mites are extremely small and frequently colonize the inner parts of the canopy. Key indicators of an infestation include fine webbing between needles and a mottled, stippled appearance on the foliage. Using a magnifying glass is essential for early scouting to determine population levels.
